Herbed Rice Recipe

It’s no secret that I love making mixes! My whole recipes section in my book, Little House Living: The Make Your Own Guide to a Frugal, Simple, and Self Sufficient Life is filled with some great basic mix recipes that I think are great to keep in any pantry.

A long time ago I published my recipe for Homemade Rice Roni (it’s in my book too!) and today I’m finally getting around to sharing another rice mix with you!

This Herbed Rice mix is so simple to put together, you only need a few herbs and the rice, and you can have several mixes on hand that will be great to pull out whenever you need them. The flavor is simple but so tasty, this makes a great side dish! I love making frugal side dishes when I can, so this one is easy to add into our meal plan.

Herbed Rice Mix Ingredients

  • Rice. This needs to be regular rice, not quick cooking rice. I usually use a long grain white rice but if you have jasmine or basmati rice or another kind, that’s fine. I buy my rice in bulk.
  • Parsley. Dried parsley, not fresh. Another thing I buy in bulk!
  • Dried Onion. Sometimes I get this from Costco. Otherwise Azure has it in bulk.
  • Dried Garlic or Garlic Powder. No matter what form of garlic you use it will be fine. I actually prefer Garlic Granules and I buy them in bulk.
  • Dried Thyme. I usually get this in bulk as well.
  • 5 pint jars or 10 jelly jars

Questions About Making Rice

What is a good seasoning to add to rice?

This Herbed Rice Mix uses Italian style seasonings but you could also do plain garlic and onion rice. Turmeric is another good spice to add to rice for a little flavor as well.

There are many other dried herbs that would work in this recipe as well (oregano. basil, rosemary, etc). It’s fun to experiment!

Why is my rice not fluffy?

If you used too much water or did not let the rice cook long enough, it will be sticky and not fluffy. When it’s cooking, try and leave it alone until it’s done and then fluff it!

What to Serve With Herbed Rice

Herbed Rice goes well with many different chicken dishes as a side dish.

You could add the rice into burritos or wraps for a heartier meal.

Stir fry the herbed rice with a meat (chicken would be best but turkey would also work, maybe beef) that has been cut into pieces and some veggies for a complete one dish meal.

Add a little lemon zest and lemon juice to the finished product (after cooking) for a yummy lemon herb rice edition!

Using a funnel, pour 2 cups of the mixture into the pint jars or 1 cup of the mixture into each jelly jar. Pint-size jars with 2 cups of the mix will make enough of this side dish for a family of 4 to 6. The jelly size jars will make enough to serve 2 or 3. Use whichever size jar will work for your family. As you can see from the pictures, I use the pint jars.

Label the jars and store them in your pantry. If you aren’t going to use them within the next 3 months or so, you may want to consider vacuum sealing them to help them last longer.

How to Make Herbed Rice from a Mix

When you are ready to make your Herbed Rice, pour the contents of 1 pint jar into a large saucepan or dutch oven with 4 cups of vegetable or chicken broth and 2 tablespoons of butter or butter substitute. Cover and let the mixture simmer for about 20 minutes. Fluff with a fork when done.

For a jelly size jar of the mix, combine with 2 cups of vegetable or chicken broth and 1 tablespoon of butter or butter substitute. Follow the cooking directions above.

If you have leftover rice, store it in an airtight container in the fridge until you are ready to warm it up again. Enjoy it a second time by reheating it in the microwave or in a toaster oven or oven at a low heat. You can also add it into a new meal (like a casserole) and heat it up with that.

Little House Living’s Tips for Making Herbed Rice Mixes

  • Mixes can be an incredible time saver in the kitchen during meal times. I highly recommend making the ones that you will eat and having them on hand at all times! Most mixes will last on your shelf storage for months unless you eat them first of course!
  • Rice is a fairly friendly food for picky eaters or for those with eating issues. If you family member does not like this particular blend of herbs, try something a little more plain like the garlic and onion spices or maybe even just salt and pepper. Be sure to use onion and garlic powder so it will just flavor the rice and not add any additional texture. You could also add turmeric to make “pretty yellow rice”. It’s a great anti-inflammatory that doesn’t add an overwhelming flavor.
  • Let your kids help in the kitchen by making this mix with you. They might even be able to make the final product for you as well depending on their skill level. Let them have a little fun with it by chopping up some fresh herbs like fresh parsley to sprinkle on top.
