4:00 am

it is is definitely senator and president are a little different. yeah. yeah. >> alright. >> i'll leave you with this in a political climate. we talked about here all the time. lawmakers seem to unfortunately, sometimes behave like school children. it is only fitting that it was a kindergartener who stole the show on the house floor on monday, tennessee republican john rose was passionately defending donald trump, but i'm pretty sure no one listened too wordy. he said, because his six-year-old son was behind him putting on quite a show we'd be well-served to remember the long and cherished tradition we guy ended up for the cameras, went viral on social media. >> we've got these comments from capitol hill staffers quotes, so sorry, i was slow responding to your email. i was tied up watching this over and over again. and this quote, he knows that was something from the minority leaders press secretary rose soon got wise

4:01 am

and shared this quote, this is what i get for telling my son guide to smile at the camera. for his little brother, i have to say that's the most storable thing i've seen in awhile. we could all use it in terms of how we think about our politics. thanks to the panel, thanks to you for joining us some kasie hunt, cnn news central starts president biden now calling donald trump, a convicted felon, the first time he called them out that way. >> and what that now signals for this new phase of the presidential election in breaking overnight, i will not be intimidated. attorney general merrick garland near outrage after attacks by republicans were learning new details about what he plans to save before them. >> this morning. >> and it is light he virtual strip club tiktok facing you accusations that it enables the sexual exploitation of children

4:02 am

zaraa is out today i'm john berman with kate bolduan. this is cnn new sim and on. >> him, president biden laying out a new line of attack against donald trump ball on the campaign trail biden was fundraising in connecticut last night when he called trump out as a convicted felon for the first time, it's also the first time that president biden is talk about trump's conviction on the campaign trail. >> president also slammed what he called donald trump's all out assault on the mirror for justice system, which is now front and center. >> once again today. and here is why attorney general merrick garland has headed to capitol hill this morning, expected to push back hard against the attacks from the right and from donald trump. when he testifies before the house judiciary jury committee, and according to his prepared remarks, just released, gardens garden will slam trump's garland will slam trump's repeated attacks and

4:03 am

conspiracy theories that he says is being weaponized against the justice department, garland declaring as john said, i will not be intimidated, seen as arlette saenz as much more on this from the white house for it so are like, can you talk to me about this new line of attack? we do need to call it from president biden against trump yeah. >> okay. president biden is really escalating his rhetoric against former president donald trump. in the wake of his conviction in new york city. now, the president, it's worth noting, made these comments in an off-camera fundraiser in greenwich, connecticut for the first time calling trump a convicted felon and saying that he is waging an all-out assault on the american justice system. but the president, also use his remarks to these donors to try to argue that trump would be even worse in a second term that he was in his four years in office, the president said, quote, something snapped in him when he lost in 2020. he can't accept he lost and it is literally driving him crazy.

4:04 am

throughout this campaign, trump has made it clear he is running two exact revenge out. these comments were made in an off-camera fundraiser oftentimes, those are types of venues where the president might speak a bit more freely or potentially test out new lines of attack that could make it into his campaign speeches out on the campaign trail. but this is all is really marking a significant moment for months president biden and his campaign team really refrained from using trump's legal cases against him out on the campaign trail. in part to avoid any perception of political interference. but in the wake of trump's conviction the conviction some democrats have argued that they should take them on. there's been some debate about whether the president should lean into using the convictions in his arguments. now, we have heard the campaign team and now the president describing trump as a convicted felon and really trying to use trump's response to this verdict as another sign that he is unfit for office. now, this all comes just a few

4:05 am

weeks before biden and trump are set to face off in their first debate right here on cnn on june 27th, the two men have a busy calendar heading into that debate. president biden, a bit later today, it expected to to depart for france for the d-day commemorations as well as a state visit. you'll have trump in arizona and nevada out on the campaign trail in the coming days. and a big focus will also be on trying to raise more money for this campaign. biden expected to attend that high-dollar fundraiser with obama, george clooney me and julia roberts in los angeles a bit later this month. and it all comes on the heels of the trump campaign announcing a major fundraising call in the month of may yesterday, the trump campaign said that they and the rnc together raised $141 million in the month of may. that includes $53 million in the first 24 hours. since the conviction. so we're still waiting to hear from the biden campaign about how much they raised but as clear with these

4:06 am

remarks from the president just yesterday, that the campaign is eager to really escalate their rhetoric, escalate their attacks on trump. is there fine to paint him as unfit for office heading into november's election well, let thank you very much for that reporting, john. all right. breaking overnight, attorney general merrick garland seems like he has had enough very shortly. he testifies before the republican led house judiciary committee, and we are learning and he has planning to slam as conspiracy theories the idea that the department of justice is being weaponized against donald trump, particularly any connection with the guilty verdict in the new york criminal case. and opening remarks shared with cnn, garlin will say this quote, i will not be intimidated and the justice department will not be intimidated. we will continue to do our jobs free from political influence and we will not back down from defending our democracy. cnn's kaitlan, poland's is with us now in these are unusually defiant words from the attorney general kaitlan really very sharply

4:07 am

worded from a an attorney general who often isn't putting himself in the center of the political mix. merrick garland is responding to criticism and pressure from republicans and what he plans to say on capitol hill today to the house judiciary committee, according to remarks, we we have obtained here at cnn in advance of that testimony is that he wants to defend the people who work in the department and the department itself. he says he doesn't want the department investigations to be defended by congress and house republicans, especially that he doesn't he wants to put an end to the conspiracy theories. he says that republicans have been spreading primarily donald trump in saying that that conviction of trump in new york was brought or motivated or that the justice department was behind it. in fact, it was not it was brought by state prosecutors, a totally separate government from itself. and

4:08 am

then he also wants to defend his own fbi agents against falsehoods. they have come under attack, especially by trump in recent days, with some additional misleading information about say, the search of mar-a-lago back in august of 2022. so merrick garland, defending the department what this is coming in response to though john is that house republicans, they are still trying to muster and impeachment proceeding against joe biden. they have been digging into the investigation around biden of his own retention of classified records that resulted in no charges when biden sat for an interview with that special counsel, a really unprecedented thing for a president to do. he had an audio recording made of that interview. house republicans want that audio recording. merrick garland won't give it to them. cnn is also suing for it, just farm will do it. and merrick garland now being pressured to be held in contempt, he says certain members of this committee and the oversight committee are seeking contempt as a means of

4:09 am

obtaining four no legitimate purpose sensitive law enforcement information that could harm the integrity of future investigations. john, in short, that's merrick garland saying, we're not giving you that audio tape at this time. >> expecting some fiery wars this morning on capitol hill, katelyn polantz, thank you very much also this morning, opening arguments are about to get underway in the trial of hunter biden, and we've new word on one who will testify and how prosecutor there's plan to make their case against the president's son and a suspect in the gilgo beach serial killings is expected to be indicted on another murder charge. >> now the details about a new search, and we're investigators were looking she was declared dead by the workers at for nursing home. two hours later, an employee at a funeral home realizes she is still breathing, we'll bring you that

otter, you've got this, the most anticipated moment jake tapper and dana bash, the cnn presidential debate, thursday, june 27th, nine live. i'd cnn and streaming backs. >> the trial of hunter biden is about to get underway with opening statements to begin this morning, and we're learning new details about how prosecutors plan to make their case against the president's son and a new court filing. the special counsel reveals three of hunter biden's former romantic partners are expected to be called to the stand one of them expected to talk about how she and her children tried to help him get sober with details like this. tausche searched his bags, backpacks, his vehicle discovered drug paraphernalia and drugs on multiple occasions this is part

4:15 am

of the federal case against him. and now the narrative prosecutors want the jury to hear cnn's marshall cohen is outside court in wilmington, delaware, delaware, where he's falling. all of these details, marshall, what do you expect from opening statements when they get underway okay. >> good morning. the prosecutors in this case, i've said that the evidence against the president's son is overwhelming, but now it's time for them to actually prove it and they can start doing that in opening statements. one of the reasons they're so confident is because they think that they've got the goods here. they have photos and videos of hunter biden use it's in rugs around drugs, right around the same time that he bought that gun here in wilmington in october 2018, that could help them win a conviction. but this such as photos and videos, there are also a trove of text messages and other materials from hunter biden's infamous laptop including some texts where allegedly he is trying to buy drugs from dealers right here

4:16 am

in wilmington. there's one text where he was saying that he was at the little league ballpark. that's just seven great minutes away from this courthouse trying to meet up with the dealer named bookie. so they think they have a lot to tell the jury. but of course, there's two sides to this story. the defendant so we'll get to present its case as well. the judge in the last few weeks has narrowed their ability to make several key arguments and present some key evidence so their job has gotten a little bit harder, but one of the things that they're focusing on is the actual text of this statute. the law says that it's against code for anyone who is a drug use is there or is an addict to buy a gun is is present tense and they're arguing that maybe he didn't think he was an addict on that particular day. so all kickoff, kate, here in about an hour-and-a-half, 9:00 a.m. in wilmington, delaware morsel. tell us more about the witnesses who were expected to be called get, out, there are

4:17 am

quite a number of interesting witnesses. three of hunter biden's former romantic partners are on the witness. this list, including hallie biden, who is the widow of his late brother, bo biden and other people that basically according to prosecutors are prepared to tell the jury that hunter biden was in fact using a lot of drugs at the time. one, who according to the prosecutors, will tell jurors that she witnessed him using crack cocaine every 20 minutes around this time. now, let me be clear here. he has been open and honest about his lifelong struggle with addiction. he wrote about it in his memoir. he's written op-eds about it but in this courtroom, prosecutors are going to try to use that against him to win conviction. kate. >> alright. marshall. thank you so much for being there and watching how this plays out this morning. >> who else have new details about a fifth murder that investigators say they have linked. >> they believe is linked to the suspected gilgo beach serial killer and pat mcafee

4:23 am

they use this cutting edge as they described it technology on nuclear dna to tie him to maureen brainard-barnes killing. >> and so we can only suspect that now they are using that same technology possibly to tie him to some other killings. >> of course we remember it was a long time ago, uh, 2010 to 2011 were ten people are found in total along a stretch of gilgo beach. but those gilgo four within a quarter mile stretch. so now again, this is a big deal because it looks like they are tying him to people that were outside that are sort of original gilgo four. so we'll see who exactly this has to do with. there were other women that fit that profile of those other four women like we're sex workers for example, we're young, we're certain body shape but we don't quite yet know who this might be in pertains to. or it could be more than one person. but we'll find out on thursday. he's back in court and of course, we know also they searched his home just last month and they found a lot of evidence. so we'll see what they uncovered when they released the details on thursday sorry, i was gonna ask him. >> we don't know for sure, but there's the possibility that this expands even beyond a

4:24 am

fifth person. >> there was always a question about that. could he be tied to more and certainly when all those bodies were found during that time of 2010 to 2011 or so, that was a question. is it one person is in multiple people were there copycats? so this is where it's starting to get a little bit interesting as now, how are they tying him to others? so we'll find out more. >> we will learn a lot more this week. i know you'll be there. brynn aggressor. great to hear. thank you very much the number of women in the us who died during pregnancy, labor, or postpartum is double or even triple that of other countries. and we've gotten your reporting this morning on why and ever feel like your boss is working less than you but making 200 times as much according to a new study. >> they are the increase in wildfires is exponential on graded, uncontrollable, with overwhelming consequences, the need to do something is urgent the filing when we have

4:30 am

islamic revolutionary guard corps was involved in that fighting as well. and we also know that the irgc does have a quite a large presence in syria. and now it's iranian semi official media that is now saying that apparently an advisor within the islamic revolution houston-area guard corps was killed in those strikes. the syrians are saying that it was a multitude the strikes that took place around aleppo, and it appears as though in one of those a member of the revolutionary guard corps was killed. now of course, that is something that does bring with it the potential for escalation in that region. we of course know that the iranians blamed israel for bombing on the embassy compound in damascus, syria on april 1, killing several top commanders in that bombing. and the iranians then struck back for the first time from their own territory, targeting israeli territory. but the key thing in all of that is that the iranians then very publicly said that they had now shifted their strategy and that every time any of their personnel would be attacked, whether it was in iran or outside of iran,

4:31 am

that iran would then strike back from its own territory. now we're going to have to wait and see what happens here as you've mentioned, a lot of the details are still quite murky. obviously, israelis have not ignored knowledge that they were behind the strikes. officially the iranians have not commented either. but of course right now, with the way things stand in the greater middle east, there is that potential for a possible escalation after a strike like that one? >> it isn't your and your perspective on this and the context around it and how things have shifted since that strike in damascus is extremely important here, fred. thank you so much for its going to stay on top of this one for us, john where we've new reporting this morning, attorney general merrick garland is expected to defend the justice department and what he testified on capitol hill very shortly and defend them with force the attorney general will slam what he calls repeated attacks and conspiracy theories about the department being weaponized he says by donald trump, he will not say donald trump's war is right there. i should be clear about that. he won't use the words donald trump and prepared remarks. garland says, quote, i

4:32 am

will not be intimidated with the style formal federal prosecutor for the southern district of new york, sarah christoph. sarah, thanks so much for being with us despite the fact that he will not mention donald trump by name, he very specifically deals with issues surrounding donald trump's specifically members of congress who've been saying that the new york criminal case is somehow connected to an overall effort to weaponize the department of justice. he'll say he'll call them false claims that a jury verdict in a state trial brought by a local district attorney was somehow controlled by the justice department. that conspiracy theory is an attack on the judicial process itself what do you think has driven him to make a statement like this before congress he really needs to do a few things here. >> given the generalized attack on doj, he needs to make it clear that the state court prosecution this led by alvin bragg has nothing to do with

4:33 am

the department of justice really help people understand the delineation between this state and federal prosecutors here. and he also really needs to show that the doj is not a political being. the republicans are really in the jimmy casie of the entire organization and he wants to buttress it and show that they are a apolitical in his view. >> he's also suggesting that some of the rhetoric coming from republican members may be connected to at least there is a sense that there are threats out there to members of the justice department and law enforcement. he says it comes at a time when we're seeing heinous threats of violence being directed at the justice department's career. public servants. he saying this rhetoric is having an impact yeah, i think he is really concerned that both about sort of both a de-legitimization of the department of justice, which is frankly probably

4:34 am

should be scary to all of us at these, this is the rule of law. >> these are the institutions that keep things going safely in. our country. and he's also concerned about individual safety. we've seen this, this rhetoric come out, these attacks and individual prosecutors, individual judges, that type of stuff is scary, particularly in light of the last few years when there have been actual attacks on mostly and judges this is this is of concern to him as it should be what's the risk of an attorney general responding to congress like this? >> obviously, the members of congress that republicans want a political fight here is merrick garland giving it to them? >> i mean, he's doing this carefully. he is measured statements. he wrote them out before he is having you know, he released them to the press beforehand. and i think he's not going to want to get

4:35 am

engaged in a back-and-forth here, but he wants to come out forcefully defended these institutions, and make it clear they are not subject to the whims of congress to the winds of politics. these are bedrock institutions that are essential for the safe and efficient running of our country. >> if i can shift gears here in a major way and focus on the federal criminal trial against hunter biden, the son of the president again, and it is notable for those who saying the department of justice is being weaponized. if so, being weaponized against the president's son as a quirky way of doing that. >> but what are you listening for this morning in these opening statements? i really curious about what the defense is here. i mean, we had a hunter biden's are poised to take this plea deal that fell apart because certain aspects of the deal really hadn't been hammered out by both sides before they got to the judge and the judge asks him i'm a hard questions and the plea deal fell apart. i am very

4:36 am

clear sort of what the defense is here. this is a very unusual case, two charge this these types of cases usually aren't charges standalone matters. so i think frankly, not that hard to prove so i'd like to hear the defense words and see where what what tractor they're going to try to get with the jury is sympathy. >> a defense or a useful defense at times for defendants i mean i think it's sort of not said outright, but certainly you want to engender that empathy from the jury. >> it is you know, there's certainly a possibility that you can in gender enough, enough empathy that you get essentially jury nullification. the jury says, okay, we think that the defendant on trial here did this crime, but we are not comfortable convicting him of that. that is generally not a defense. you want to lead

4:37 am

with. and when that is particularly successful but they certainly may try to employ some of that surface off. >> thanks so much for being with us morning. appreciate it okay. so united states has the highest rate of maternal deaths compared to other high-income nations, but that thinkin, despite long being seen as the shining city on the hill, in some cases, the united state suffers a maternal mortality rate that is double or triple. what other nation, other wealthy nations experience seen as jacqueline howard joins us right now with more on this and jacqueline, united states is sadly long suffered in this area even before this latest reading and the latest numbers. why is united states? still come up so short? so, yeah, so short here yeah, okay. >> and these latest numbers give us the latest snapshot on how we compare with our peers. and it shows that here the united states, we have the lowest supply of midwives we still have under-supply of

4:38 am

obstetricians and gynecologists. and we know oh most maternal deaths occur in that postpartum period. this new report estimates about 65% occur postpartum and in all other high-income nations, they guarantee that mothers who've just given birth or guaranteed at least one home visit by their medical care team in that first week post it's part here in the united states, kate, we don't always give that level of care and that seems to be driving are high maternal mortality rate which countries are doing better? >> why are they doing so much better? and is there even one nation reporting zero maternal deaths? >> that's what surprised me, kate norway recorded zero maternal deaths and most other high-income nations record fewer than five deaths for every 100,000 women giving birth. so when you look in switzerland, they have about one death recorded per one hundred thousand in the uk,

4:39 am

it's about five deaths per 100 100,000. the countries that have similar rates to us, a new zealand records about 14. chile records about 14 deaths per 100,000. but here in the united states, we have the highest rate at 22 deaths per 100,000 births. and kate black women are the most impacted when it comes to maternal mortality in the us, when you look at black women alone, the rate is 50 deaths per 100,000. so we know everywhere in the world, kate, every two minutes, a woman dies due to pregnancy or childbirth birth anywhere in the world. but when you look at where we stand in the united states and how we compare with other high-income nations. >> it's disturbing to see these kinds of disparities and to see these high rates of deaths, and it really shows that we can do more with supporting lemon during pregnancy, supporting them during childbirth providing the level of care that's really needed out there, kate, i mean, when you think about amongst

4:40 am

wealthy nations, it's hard to see the united states doing less i mean, the us health care system when it comes to this, especially for black mothers is failed for so long. >> glee, it's beyond a tragic, absolutely beyond and being reminded of it, once again though, is extremely important to shine another light on it. thank you, jacqueline lee, john, you statistics, not new but surprising every time i see them this morning, a new study shows that ceos at some of the nation's top companies are making nearly 200 times more than their employees. cnn's matt egan is with us now. i'm at what he learned here. >> well, john, it's a great time to be a ceo. some of these pay packages are pretty epic. now, see you as have always made more money than their workers, but the gap is widening now last year, see you as meet 196 times what their median employee made. >> that's according to the study from aquila and associated press. now, that is up from 185 times the year

4:41 am

before the gap is widening. because see, you pay is rising much faster than worker pay. the median ceo of s&p 500 companies made just over $16 million. last year. that is up 13% from the year before. now, the good news and pull it is employees, they made more money to just over $81,000. that's up 5%. >> obviously, a much slower pace just to take this a step further, the average employee made about $4,300 more than the year before they ever see you 1.5 million more. >> now, obviously these numbers are tough to swallow right now because a lot of workers are struggling with the high cost of living, right? >> i mean, groceries, daycare car insurance, life is expensive and paychex, they're still just catching up from three years of high inflation. is there any reason why? hey, it's happening right now? >> well, yeah, see, you pay is influenced very much by how the stock market is doing. and last year was a gangbuster year for

4:42 am

the stock market and see you pay. it's not really driven by their salary or their perks, although the perks are pretty sweet, that's what i hear it's really the stock awards and this study found that stuff records were up by 11% year over year to nine 9.4 million. and when we look at the list of the highest paid ceos in the s&p 501 name stands above all of them. and that's hoc tan. he is the ceo of tech giant broadcom. he raked in 100 and 62 million in total pay. almost all of that came in stock awards. and this was after broadcom stock almost doubled last year, that amounts to more than 500 times the median employee pay. other notable ceos topping to pay charts include apple ceo tim cook, and netflix ceo ted surrenders and listen with the stock market near record highs, we could expect to see these ceo pay

4:43 am

packages get even bigger next year, john, i think at the end of the day, the real question though is you would obviously be a great ceo. what do you do with $106 million on whatever i want isn't that why you're a ceo absolutely. >> it's good work if you can get it. >> matt egan. thanks. i guess for me, shade it so a virtual strip club that is what tiktok is being called and a new lawsuit against the social media platform and then do sometimes get the urge dramatically roll your eyes or stick out your tongue when a politician speaks, a errantly so do their family members this 6-year-old, better behaved by should note that some members of congress did not hold back during his father's speech on the house floor cnn business updates it is brought to you by pods, trusted with more than 6

4:49 am

hours later, the tories were called immediately after the 70-year-old was found alive and then transferred to a hospital where she does remain alive. >> police were baffled this is very unusual case than doing this 31 years. >> and nothing like this has ever gotten to this point before. there's been people that we've gone to and found before, but it was waived for something like this is how the woman's family was notified and police are now investigating the nursing home. this is why you check your work. >> this is he says this is rare, but thank god odd chess that is crazy. all right. >> this morning we're going to transition to this this morning. the trump campaign and the rnc are touting a new campaign hall saying now they've raised a combined $141 million in the month the may for trump's reelection campaign, they say 53 million of that alone was brought in 24 hours in the, in the 24 hours after the criminal conviction last week, over one-third of

4:50 am

the monthly total cnn's alayna treene has much more on this later, this is significantly more than we've seen in the past. what are they saying about it? >> it is and when you talked to trump advisers, kate it's clear that they're trying to capitalize on this historic and unprecedented conviction as much as possible. and that means both politically and financially. and i do just want to break down some of these numbers for you. and what i find really interesting now is that 140 million that's roughly double what the trump campaign raised in. it last month, but it's also, it would be combined what the biden campaign raised, both in march and april. so as you said, significantly more than they have raised in the past and they're attributing this. most of this to the verdict now, if you look at what the trump campaign is saying, they say that roughly $70 million was raised alone after the verdict was delivered by the jury. when i find really interesting as well about these numbers is that this is hard money that is

4:51 am

going directly to the rnc and the trump campaign. this does not include the millions of dollars that they say donald trump super packs have raised as well. now donald trump's team is obviously touting these numbers. they're doing as much as they can to maximize these types of donations. but you also have his allies and specifically some of his vice presidential contenders also trying to do this fundraising forum. we've heard people like jd vance, tim scott hi, doug burgum, all people who are on his potential vp list saying that this is unifying the republican party and pushing people to show their support for donald trump. and that's something that the trump campaign says as well. but what i want to note here and to be very clear is that they still do not know how this is going to impact him politically. we are seeing this major boost in fundraising and support immediately after the verdict was delivered. but how will this play out in the general election and specifically, after that current sentencing date of july 11, which comes

4:52 am

just days before the republican national convention in july when i talked to donald trump's advisers, they admit that they are not sure how this is going to play out. the question really is and what remains is wilson republicans be ultimately turned off by this conviction, leading up to the convention and also how will independent voters specifically look at this conviction as we look forward to november okay. >> yeah. and that really gets to how important the messaging is around it. so i think it's not just the conviction, it's in the weeks ahead. the message around it and what and what works when it comes to this and who benefits more. it's great to see you. thank you. >> joining us time to talk about this. a democratic strategist, co-founder of lift our voices, julie reagan, ski, and republican strategist rena shot. it's great to see guys. thank you for being here. you heard all the great reporting from alayna treene on that 100 141 million combined raised in may, it's it is a huge number. and i also have ringing in the back of my head, rena, a lot of

4:53 am

smart republican strategist also saying no matter the dollar amount both men are going to have enough to run through the tape and run in finished this election with plenty of campaign cash with that in mind, how important are these numbers right now? >> not that important because i am actually not that impressed by this figure. i thought it would be higher really. >> yeah, because this monday was already sitting out there in the ether. >> it was just waiting to be active beta by this conviction, these are people who had already planned to give. these are people who are motive by fear and anger. and this was a bump that comes from, again, a sensational headline. and this is what donald trump needs to survive where's this money going to go though? that's the question let's not forget three more cases sit on deck. legal fees are exorbitant we also know that the rnc has been transparent these days talking about how they will pay for trump's legal fees. it was already done during ronna mcdaniel time. we don't think it's going to increase under lara trump sitting over there and the leadership, it's absolute going to happen. but i am not impressed by the

4:54 am

percentage of new donors also that are coming and giving in this post-conviction moment, he'll get bumps, he'll get another one from the debate. heal. he's just looking for the bumps, but again, this was money sitting out there waiting to be activated. it's not that impressive and it's really an interesting what did democrats do about this? i mean, do you see this as a problem for joe biden and the dnc no. i mean, look, the dnc's continuing to raise money biden obviously has more cash on hand than trump does. >> trump's not going to rena's, right. trump's not going to have these kinds of bumps every month this is coming together now because he was convicted of a crime and republicans are coalescing around him eventually, he's going to get another bump and maybe another bump, but it's not consistent what is consistent is that he's going to have to spend as we pointed out, these money on legal fees, he's gonna have to spend this money on whatever other activities that are purely for donald trump's personal benefit and not necessarily for his campaign democrats have been building a huge get out the vote effort. democrats have a building a huge army effectively if voters and workers to get out the vote and to trump you, julie, your

4:55 am

mega fantastic point. i remember in years past and you remember number we've been doing politics for a long time, that by now there would be so many victory offices. there would be field operations by trumping company on the dem side, there's so much more activated again of field operations. i'm seeing none of that on the gop. sayyed scary, but we are seeing compare it to campaigns in the past that the trump campaign is far more organized than we have seen in terms of donald trump's campaign. campaigns in the past this, we've seen a shift from president biden, julie at this fundraiser. hizon fundraising event. it's behind closed doors. pool reports come out. he's in connecticut and he's now calling donald trump, a convicted felon for the first time. here's exactly what how he put it. >> he also saying this, but as disturbing as that is being a convicted felon more damaging is the all out assault donald trump is making on the american system of justice. >> so he's making this. do you like that? he's sharpening his attack on trump. there's always

4:56 am

the how far do you go and what does it cross the line to actually backlash due to fly back in your face? >> what do you mean biden's message should be very simple. donald trump wants to talk about himself, and i want to talk about you. if donald trump gets elected, he will focus only on himself. he has appeals. he's got other potential cases. look, the federal cases are going to go away from the president hearing that here, right? i'm not hearing it yet. he better you better start doing it and i've always said the white house has a messaging problem and the messaging problem is this. the contrast is very easy. >> i am about you. donald trump is about himself, everything it's going to happen in a second. trump administration will only be even more about donald trump. there are real issues happening to you in the world and to you in this country? and you need a president who is going to focus on you and not himself. and this is part and parcel of what's going on and that's something the president should be talking about much more for republicans down-ballot republicans. this can the criminal conviction poses. i'm describing it as like a new set of landmines that they have to decide how they want to navigate political. is an interesting report out this

4:57 am

morning highlighting the difference of approach. now post-conviction between vulnerable, vulnerable republicans running in new york, vulnerable republicans running in california, republican representatives might garcia, michelle steel, david validate you. these are in california of stayed mom in the days since the verdict despite multiple requests to their campaigns for comment, yet mike lawler out of new york, who has kept an arm's distance from trump in some, in some respects for sure, saying this after the conviction, our elections should be decided at the ballot box, not by partisan prosecutors. what do you make of the different approaches? and maybe most importantly now how how hard is it for republicans to navigate that aren't named trump? >> well, let me give you an example from california with michelle steel who you just named. she's had an incredible grassroots ground game for years. her coming to congress was the result of many years of establishing goodwill in her district she's a prolific fundraiser. she's an example of somebody who understand. she's out on her own by herself, has to hang out there because donald trump's not going to

4:58 am

take care of her. that used to be something that happened in the past. the party the top of the ticket took care of you, came out, showed up for you and show it out for you. it's every man for themselves now and michelle steel gets that. but luckily for her, she's all right. are other is gonna be all right like that. i don't think so. and so many of them sitting in congressional races that are tough and more complicated by trump in his messaging or lack thereof, i must add, and his abandonment and the rnc's abandonment of them they're probably feeling some kind of way about the president, but they know they can't step out of line. i wish they would because people like michelle steel will go on to live another day because of the game she set up for herself. again, that goodwill, the ability to fundraise like crazy before she came to congress. it's the other that are others that are in danger. and the republicans better wise up to it. or they're going to lose elections for cycles to come. >> it's really, i mean, it definitely poses a real choice. and a lot of calculation going into it that politicians do all the time with regard to this conviction and i kinda what happens in the coming months for them, it's good to see you guys. thank you for coming. i'm horse jump.

4:59 am

>> right this morning and explosive new lawsuit against tiktok has now accused the social media app of creating a virtual strip club for children. >> the suit was filed by utah's attorney general who claims that tiktoks livestream it not only allows the sexual exploitation of minors, but it is connecting innocent victims to predators in real time. seen as clare duffy has the latest love is claire, what are you learning? >> right? >> so this lawsuit specifically does take issue with this livestream feature on tiktok called tiktok live. and that's where users can host live videos, interact with comments and with viewers in real time. and the platform also allows viewers to send monetary gifts, which are often represented by colorful emojis to the users hosting live streams. now, often you'll see a livestream are offering a shout out or in other incentive, if somebody sends them a gift. but this lawsuit claims that those kinds of incentives where users are performing for real-time, for money is vino can create some perverse incentives where

5:00 am

children can be exploited. the lawsuit claims that children can be incurred bridged by adults to engage in illicit acts on camera in exchange for money. and the lawsuit also claims and i'm quoting here that tiktok makes these animated gifs even more tempting by designing them like cute, colorful emojis clearly aimed at children. now, tiktok has pushed back on the claims in this report. a spokesperson told me the that the platform has industry-leading policies and measures to help protect the safety and well-being of teens. also said that creators must be at least 18-years-old before they can use this livestream feature. and that the company immediately revokes access to features if we find accounts that do not meet our age requirements, but look, this it's lawsuit claims that tiktok doesn't have sufficient age verification and enforcement measures to ensure that it really is only adults using this livestream feature, john clare duffy. >> thank you so much for reporting on this is somet
